  • Product Overview

The BT136, developed by STMicroelectronics, is a high-performance bidirectional thyristor (TRIAC) designed for AC load control. With 600V voltage rating4A RMS current, and optimized triggering characteristics, it is ideal for applications such as dimming, motor speed control, and heating regulation.

    Key Features

    High Voltage & Current Handling

    • Repetitive Off-State Voltage (VDRM/VRRM): 600V, suitable for mains voltage fluctuations.
    • RMS On-State Current (IT(RMS)): 4A, supports medium-power load driving.

    Sensitive Triggering & Low Loss

    • Trigger Current (IGT): 5-35mA, compatible with direct microcontroller driving.
    • On-State Voltage Drop (VTM): ≤1.7V (@ IT=4A), minimizing conduction losses.

    Compact Package

    • TO-220AB through-hole package, compatible with standard heatsink designs for easy installation and maintenance.

    Plug-and-Play Integration

    • Standard pin/terminal interfaces compatible with mainstream industrial power systems.
    • Supports parallel operation for high-power applications.

    Typical Applications

    • Home Appliances: Fan speed control, rice cooker heating regulation.
    • Industrial Equipment: Small motor drives, solenoid valve control.
    • Lighting Systems: LED dimmer circuits, incandescent lamp switching.
    • Temperature Control Systems: Electric blankets, thermostat power adjustment.

    1. Does the trigger current (IGT) of BT136-600E vary with temperature? Answer >
Yes. According to Table 7 (Characteristics) in the datasheet, the trigger current (IGT) varies across quadrants and temperatures: 1.In Quadrant I (T2+ G+): The typical IGT is 2.5mA (max 10mA) at 25°C, but decreases as junction temperature (Tj) rises to 125°C (see Figure 7). 2.In Quadrant IV (T2- G+): The IGT range is higher (typical 11mA, max 25mA). Designers should account for sensitivity changes at elevated temperatures. Adjust trigger circuit parameters based on the application’s temperature range.

    2. Does the BT136-600E require a heatsink? >
Depends on operating conditions: 1.Thermal Resistance: Junction-to-mounting base thermal resistance (Rth(j-mb)) is 3 K/W (full cycle) or 3.7 K/W (half cycle) (Table 6). 2.Power Dissipation: If on-state losses (P = IT(RMS)² × Rth(j-mb)) cause the junction temperature to exceed 125°C (max allowed), a heatsink is mandatory. Example: At 4A load, if losses reach 4² × 3 = 48W, Tj will exceed limits, requiring active cooling.

    3. Can BT136-600E replace BT136-600D? >
Yes, but note the following differences: 1.Voltage Rating: BT136-600E has a higher repetitive off-state voltage (VDRM = 600V) vs. 600D (400V), improving system voltage tolerance. 2.Trigger Compatibility: Both share similar IGT ranges (e.g., 5-35mA in Quadrant I), but verify compatibility with existing driver circuits. 3.Package: Identical TO-220AB pinout allows direct replacement.
